Bikini Clock-Banned from Ovi Store, But You Can Still Download One

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Remember Apple pulling down the shutters on its 5000 odd adult themed apps over-night sometime last month? Well, we all know how frivolous Apple can be when it comes to their app screening policies but we are now seeing similar behavior in Nokia’s Ovi store as well. Well not exactly as unpredictable as Apple but taking a leaf out of Apple’s approach of keeping its app repository “clean”, Nokia have banned “Bikini Clock” from their Ovi store.

Nokia never really took a stand against pornography and Bikini clock doesn’t have anything that one wouldn’t see on a public beach. So, the rejection must have been a jolt from the blue for the developers but unlike Apple’s strict control, symbian developers are legally allowed to release their apps via third party stores. So here’s Bikini Clock for you.

Screenshots-

By now you must have got a fair idea of what the app is all about. It just doesn’t bust bikini clad hotties on your 5800s with a tiny little digital clock on the top but what it does is it gives the users the option of dressing and undressing (not complete nudity ofcourse!).

It’s a flash based and were it not for the hot girls in the background, it has little to no practical usage for the clock is far too small to be of any practical usage. But then it has hot girls and the very fact that it was banned from Ovi store, make this worth a try.

Bikini Clock can be downloaded for free from PicoBrothers

  2. Bugs with Compose Email window (characters were shown as empty boxes as can be seen in the fourth screenshot)

Verdict

Emoze is a welcome addition to the symbian community with its free push-messaging service. This adds one of the top requested feature of push-email support to symbian devices and since its a free service, a larger community of users can now use this service. Though it has a few bugs (we listed above), we are sure they will be fixed soon and users can enjoy seamless push-messaging service on their 5800s.

Emoze can be downloaded for free from Emoze.com (desktop browser) or m.Emoze.com(mobile browser).

Nokia Music to Become Ovi Music, Tracks to go DRM Free!

Monday, March 8th, 2010

The Comes With Music Service which opened an all new chapter in the music industry, especially in Europe and Asian markets is all set for a grand change as Nokia hinted at removing the DRM shackles from the tracks downloaded from its online music store.

Rumours of Nokia Music going DRM free first started when Nokia India started mailing out their subscribers late last month, announcing the re-branding of Nokia Music into Ovi Music among other things. This was recently confirmed by  a press statement by Adam Mirabella, director, Global Digital Music Retail, Nokia, who said “We have dialogues going with all of our partners and Digital Rights Management-free (DRM-free) is also on the roadmap for the future integration of ‘Comes With Music’.” More information and the e-mail forwarded by Nokia India after the break.

Nokia India’s e-mail-

As you may know DRM ties down the downloaded tracks to just one PC and one Nokia device, very much to the frustration of users who are deprived of free-will usage of music, despite having purchased the music via legal online channels . With International Data Corporation (IDC), 2008 figures pitching Nokia at the tops spot with a gigantic 50 % market share in the Asia Pacific online music sales; Nokia has made the right decision to go DRM free for their online music store. (For comparison in APAC region, Sony-Ericsson enjoys  5 % market share and Apple’s iTunes has penetrated less than 1% of the market.

So set back and enjoy while the engineers and developers at Nokia toil over to bring DRM free tracks to your 5800s. We are also hoping DRM free versions of all the previously purchased tracks will be available for free from the Ovi Music Store as and when it’s released.

Symbian^3 on 5800! Just a Theme Though

Monday, March 8th, 2010

symian^3 Heard about the Symbian^3 and wondering if you would ever get it on your 5800? Well, you don’t have to wait for long for Theme Master AJ23 over at AJ23 blog has skimmed some of the visual elements of Symbian^3 as a theme for our 5800s and other symbian 5th and even 3rd edition devices.

While it’s no doubt that the Symbian^3 announcement has taken the mobile industry by a storm with inclusion of some of the most sought-after features, the recent announcement of Symbian^4 has taken the Symbian platform to an all new level. So while the Nokia engineers and hackers break their sweat over coding and porting atleast one of these platforms to our 5800s, let’s enjoy the theme on our 5800s.

Screenshots-

symbian^3 symbian^3 symbian^3 symbian^3

Now that looks appealing, doesn’t it? Well yeah, it doesn’t have the high gloss and design of some of the top themes from Babi or TehkSeven but it does a great job of mimicking the UI or rather the colour scheme of Symbian^3 on the symbian 5th and 3rd edition devices.  Some of the customized icons are well-designed and the designer does deserve a little credit for the icons and the dual-colour QWERTY keyboard.

What we like?

  1. Good colour scheme (matches well with the released Symbian^4 UI)
  2. Well-designed icons

What we don’t like?

  1. Absence of customized icons to some of the popular third-party applications
  2. Background not as appealing as the ones in top themes

Verdict

We would rather say that the Symbian^3 theme will be a fad, with some enthusiasts downloading and using the theme for a week or two after the announcement and may be later when the full Symbian^3 platform is released to the market.

Opera Mobile 10 Updated to Beta 3, No Flash Support

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Opera, best known for its light weight browsers on desktop and mobile platforms have recently added another feather in their cap with the release of Opera Mobile 10 beta 3. Yeah, we know it’s still in it’s beta 3, but the inclusion of Flash in this version, makes it all the more exciting in the war of the browsers in the symbian domain.

The last time we covered browsers from Opera, we included both the java based Opera Mini and the stand-alone browser or as AAS puts it “natively coded” Opera Mobile in our review, last year, when the beta 2s were out. More than two months down the line, Opera Mobile has been update to beta 3, while the mini is still in beta 2. Look’s like the Oracle buy out of Sun (developers of Java) is starting to have an impact on java based products! Nevertheless, let’s find out how the beta 3 of Opera Mobile fares on our 5800s, after the break though.

Screenshots-

Opera Mobile 10 beta 3 Opera Mobile 10 beta 3 Opera Mobile 10 beta 3 Opera Mobile 10 beta 3

Our first impression of the latest version of the browser was rather encouraging with noticeably faster loading times and transitions between different tabs. However, we were let down with the flash rendering. We were actually looking forward to smooth flash performance here but all we got was a disappointing “Connecting” hang-screen in the Real Media player when we tried to access YouTube videos.

Opera Mobile 10 beta 3 Opera Mobile 10 beta 3

Our repeated attempts at accessing flash content was a failure and hence we couldn’t really test flash streaming on this version of the browser. If any of you are able to please let us know. We did find out that the WinMo version of the browser does handle flash but rather disappointingly as observed by FavBrowser.com.

In absence of flash, web browsing is rather incomplete and though Opera Mobile 10 has some amazing features like the Opera Link and Download Manager, we would still stick with Skyfire for it’s flash support. But being still in its beta 3, we expect Opera Mobile 10 to grow by leaps and bounds as and when the final version is released.

Till then, do get the feel of the latest mobile browser from Opera by pointing your mobile browser to http://m.opera.com/mobile

UPDATE:
A quick look at the Opera Blog reveals that Flash lite support is experimental and is only released on the WinMo platform as of now. No wonder we kept running all over the place trying to get the YouTube stream on our 5800s.

MyPhone Updated to v2.50: Blows Your Mind Away

MyPhone v2.5 Our friends at MMMOOO just can’t help making things better, now can they? Released just prior to the biggest festival in China and elsewhere, the Lunar New Year, the latest version of MyPhone (v2.50) is the best emulator to date for the symbian fifth edition platform.

As you might know by now, MyPhone does more than just mimicking the iPhone interface on your 5800s, with games like Memo Deduction, and now the latest version has added the archery game, which is just perfect to get rid of those boring minutes (or hours) of your daily transit time. Nokia 5800 Game Review: That Roach Game

Monday, March 8th, 2010

If you are the ones who scream at the very sight of a cock-roach, then read no further for this game is all about cockroaches. No, the developers are not glorifying this species for the world already knows about their holocaust survival capabilities. Instead what the game let’s you do is squash cockroaches for fun!

Yeah, we are not kidding: the That Roach Game is all about killing cockroaches. If that’s grabbed your attention, let us inform you that this is one of the engaging games we have seen on our Nokia 5800s. Wondering how engaging can smashing cockroaches be? Find out after the break.

Screenshots-

That-Roach-Game That-Roach-Game

THAT-ROACH-GAME That-Roach-Game

This is a flash based game and a very good one at that, perhaps one of the very best we have seen on our 5800s. The game is based in South Africa but that doesn’t mean the rest of the world is left out of this fun. Infact if you see the top 20 countries in the scores, South Africa doesn’t even figure in the list! That goes on to show how much people around the world are enjoying squashing these roaches.

While just squashing may not sound very engaging, developers have made it all the while more entertaining by adding social networking to the game. Well not exactly social networking like Facebook games but the game statistics which are displayed country-wise as we talked about earlier and the “shout” option add that networking fun to the game.

What we like?

  1. Engaging gameplay with increasing difficulty over time
  2. Social Networking Twist is fun
  3. Provides a wealth of information on roaches and their spread across South African cities

What we don’t like?

  1. Perhaps they should add a few other rodents!

Verdict

With the Soccer world cup heading to South-Africa, the municipal authorities may not do much to get rid of the roaches but we can assure you that gamers across the world will definitely give the roaches a tough time, albeit in a virtual world! So do your bit to get rid of the roaches before the World-cup fever catches on with the African nation.

Skype for Symbian Fifth Edition Gets Official

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Skype for the Symbian has finally arrived! Yeah, we know we said that before, but we weren’t sure then as it was available only for networks of 3 in Europe and a  few other destinations in late August last year. But the folks at Skype have set things right with the worldwide release of the symbian version of the popular VoIP client.

We have been recommending Fring and Nimbuzz for Skypeing for quiet a while now. Does the official client from Skype change our opinion? Let’s find out after the break.

Screenshots-

skype-on-s60v5 skype-on-s60v5 skype-on-s60v5 skype-on-s60v5

[via AAS]

The first thing that strikes to you when you start using this client, is the enormous loading times each task takes: from signing-in to syncing chat history (which can easily take a minute or two) but what’s satisfying is the diverse feature set which is almost (you will find out later why we say almost here) same as the one we find on the desktop version of the client.

What we like?

  1. Diverse feature set
  2. Ability to sync with phone contacts for calls via Skype-out credits

What we don’t like?

  1. No VIDEO CHAT
  2. RAM intensive structure leaves us no options but to kill all the other apps when using Skype

Verdict

The official version of Skype for Symbian is no doubt a promising client but it just falls short of expectations when compared to competing apps like Fring and Nimbuzz. Not only does it lack video calling support but it takes a rather heavy load on RAM, making it virtually impossible to multi-task while Skypeing on your 5800s. So we would still stick with Fring for our VoIP needs as of now, but there is nothing wrong in trying this official Skype client on your 5800s.
